Main Focus Areas

A vacancy exists for a Rehab Doctor  within the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Ethekwini Hospital & Heart Centre. This successful candidate will report to Practice Manager/ Hospital Manager

Key Performance Areas: (include but are not limited to)

  • Clinical management – day-to-day clinical management of all rehabilitation inpatients
  • Clinical summation – develop, communicate, and continuously update a clear clinical summary for each patient, including the patient rehabilitation diagnosis, the clinical and functional prognosis, secondary prevention strategies, the comorbidities, co-disabilities, the potential complications and how to prevent these.
  • Provide holistic clinical services at the rehabilitation unit to in-patients of the rehabilitation unit
  • Conduct the admission clinical assessment daily management of patients admitted to the unit, including ensuring suitable cover for the weekend, public holiday ward rounds
  • Develop and implement a tailored bowel and bladder management program for each patient
  • After-hour telephonic on-call support and on-site emergency care.
  • Driving a spasticity management Programme.
  • Stakeholder management – develop and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the development and maintenance of a leading acute rehabilitation service.
  • Promote and maintain sound and productive relationships with referring specialists, the EHHC leadership team, the EHHC specialist community and stakeholders in the field of Rehabilitation.
  • Promote and maintain sound and productive relationships with the entire rehabilitation team
  • Clinical governance and leadership of the interdisciplinary team in the context of an acute rehabilitation service and other similar services to be developed. Develop, implement and manage with the leadership team the various team and family processes for the successful implementation of an inpatient acute rehabilitation service
  • Participation in family meetings, team goal setting, and rehabilitation plan review meetings.
  • Participation in the weekly rehabilitation meetings
  • Participating in compiling patient reports to funders and referring doctors.
  • Assist with the marketing of the business and the positioning of the unit as a Centre for excellence
  • Actively participating in morbidity and mortality meetings.
  • Proactively managing conflict within the team
  • Education and training – self and the team
  • Develop, implement, and monitor high-level professional training for staff.
  • Complete the IRF rehabilitation fellowship training
  • Develop, implement, and monitor risk mitigating training interventions for the team
  • Management – contribute to the management team of the acute rehabilitation unit as a niche service within the broader EHHC community
  • Compliance to company policies and formulary and anti-microbial stewardship programmes.
  • Monitor and continuously improve employee, patient, referral specialist feedback
  • Actively participate in leadership and management process
  • Represent the image of the company at a professional level

Post Requirements: (include but are not limited to)

  • A relevant MBCHB degree
  • Registration with Health Professions Council of South Africa
  • In good standing with Health professions Council of South Africa and all applicable health care legislations
  • Compulsory BLS and ACLS certification (to complete in the first year of working in the unit)
  • Current indemnity and malpractice insurance (permanent on demand and locum positions)Specialist specialty is an advantage.
  • Hospital-based clinical experience in neurology, orthopedics and/or general medicine is a requirement. Experience in acute rehabilitation is an advantage
  • Experience in working with a team of professionals
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are important for the position.
  • Experience of working in interdisciplinary care with a rehabilitation team.
  • Hospital-based clinical knowledge in neurology, orthopedics and/or general medicine is a requirement. Experience in acute rehabilitation is an advantage
  • Computer literacy
