Main Focus Areas

A vacancy exists for an experienced Occupational Therapist within the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Ethekwini Hospital & Heart Centre. The successful candidate will report to Therapy Manager. The occupational therapist will be responsible for providing holistic therapeutic interventions to in-patients in the acute rehabilitation unit. Occupational Therapists will assess, plan and implement therapy to enhance the patients functional abilities and activities of daily living. You will contribute your expertise to an interdisciplinary team, committed to person-centered rehabilitation and high quality outcomes.

Key Performance Areas: (include but are not limited to)

  • Provide occupational therapy assessment and intervention to in-patients who require occupational therapy including on some weekends and public holidays.
  • Conduct assessments, plan and implement occupational therapy intervention to patients with e.g. neurological disorders such as TBI, CVA, SCI, orthopedic conditions or multi-morbidity conditions such as Guillain Barre, etc. in collaboration with other therapy disciplines.
  • Assess all Stroke patients and other relevant patients’ self-care ability and level of dependence upon admission as well as need for a wheelchair.
  • Educate patients and their families about the patient’s condition.
  • Assessment for the need for assistive devices and the motivation for the required assistive devices to the funder and family.
  • Participate in discharge planning and carer training.
  • Contribute to weekly team and family meetings.
  • Keep accurate and timeous records and reports.
  • Effectively respond to queries and handle accordingly.
  • Function effectively as a part of an interdisciplinary team to meet the requirements of quality patient care.
  • Attend and contribute towards Continuous Professional Development activities of the unit.
  • Supervision and training of university students, as required.
  • Promote and maintain sound and productive relationships with referral sources and stakeholders in the field of Rehabilitation.

Post Requirements: (include but are not limited to)

  • A Bachelor of Occupational Therapy Degree, with community service year completed
  • Registration with the Health Professional Council as a occupational therapist.
  • NDT (neuro-developmental treatment) trained
  • In good standing with HPCSA and all applicable health care legislations
  • Clinical expertise (>5 years of clinical experience in an acute rehabilitation setting)
  • Experience with working with an interdisciplinary team
  • Computer proficiency
  • Good written and spoken English language skills.
  • Broad clinical exposure
  • Able to work independently
  • Experience with aqua therapy
  • Postgraduate courses (Vocational rehabilitation, wheelchair seating, return to driving) an advantage
  • Awareness of evidence-based interventions
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transport
  • BLS certification
